How to Measure For New Siding

How do I calculate how much siding I need?

Start by measuring the height and width of each wall of the building. Multiply each length and height measurement to find the square footage of each wall, then add them together to find the total square footage. Divide the total by 100 to find the number of squares of vinyl siding to order.

A “square of siding” is a measurement of siding material. One square of siding is sufficient to cover 100 square feet of wall space. A square of siding is thus sufficient to cover a 10-foot by 10-foot section of exterior wall.

How many square feet does a box of siding cover?

200 square feet

A box of vinyl siding contains two “squares.” A square in construction lingo equals 100 square feet, so a box of vinyl siding will cover 200 square feet.

Follow these steps for calculations you’ll use to learn how to measure for wood siding:

  1. Measure height and width of each side. For each side, multiply height times width to get the total square feet.
  2. Measure other areas not included in the sides, such as gables, dormers and more. For triangle areas, measure from the base of the triangle to the top and multiply that number by half of the base length.
  3. Measure the height and width of each window, door and other areas not covered by siding. When in doubt, account for 15 square feet for windows and 20 square feet for doors.
  4. Add together the square footage you calculated for the sides of your home and the additional areas.
  5. Subtract the uncovered areas’ square footage from the total amount you calculated in step four.
  6. Divide this number by 100 to get the number of squares of siding you will need to order.

Aerial vs. Onsite Roofing

We are now at the point where we can give someone a home improvement estimate without having to lay a hand on the house.

This is because companies like SKY Roof Measure allow us to get a fully rendered and measured 3D model of any home simply by transforming photos taken with your smartphone. This has helped contractors and insurance carriers to become more efficient, reduce their costs, and minimize closing times all through an app.

The accuracy of onsite measurements is more accurate than a plane flying hundreds of feet higher. The aerial measurements are usually rounded to the nearest foot rather than the in-person measurements where they get down to the inch.

  • Problem solving

  • Review Measurements – Access all roof and siding measurements within the 3D model in their app or online. Or export via PDF, Excel, or other file formats. Design in 3D – Change the roof, siding, and windows using real materials from brands like GAF, JamesHardie, and Alside. See the finished project with their fully shareable 3D model.

Why Getting Detailed Roof Measurements is Important & Helpful

Getting detailed and accurate rooftop measurements is important for a variety of applications. Perhaps you work for a construction firm. You may need detailed diagrams of the roof with accurate measurements of the ridges, valleys, hips, eaves, and a clear visual understanding of where vent pipes and chimneys are located on the roof.

You could also be performing a rooftop inspection and need to properly assess a damaged area for an accurate estimate for repair. Or perhaps you need to calculate the area of your roof to estimate the cost of getting it re-shingled or get a quote for a solar panel installation.

Drones present a unique opportunity for getting a clear view of your rooftop and allowing you to get precise roof measurements. A variety of roof measuring applications and programs already take advantage of high-resolution drone imagery to get accurate roof measurements.

How to Manually Measure a Roof

To manually measure a roof without the help of aerial measurement reports, you must visit a job site and climb onto the roof to take precise roof measurements by hand.

  1. Measure the width and length of each plane of the roof (including dormers), and then multiply those numbers to get the correct figure for the square footage of that area.
  2. Note any skylights, chimneys or other parts of the roof that would not require materials so you can subtract those measurements from your total area.
  3. Add together the calculated square footage of each surface to get the figure for total square footage of the roof.
  4. After determining the total square footage of the roof, you must calculate the pitch of the roof by measuring the vertical distance (rise) over a 12 inch horizontal segment (run).
  5. Write down these numbers as the vertical measurement listed first and the horizontal measurement recorded second so you can find rise over run.
  6. When you have the total square footage and rise over run of the roof, you can calculate the roof squares to determine how much materials are needed to cover the roof. To calculate the number of squares on a roof, you need to divide its total square feet by 100.

With those figures, you can then estimate the roofing supplies needed for a job.

How To Measure The Roof Using Google Earth

There are many great benefits to using Google Earth to measure your roof but nothing is as good as using DIY’s satellite roof measurement. The first of which is that you don’t even have to go up on the roof. This can make it even safer to do your measuring and it also removes a level of guessing to your calculation.

To begin with, you’re going to go to the app on your mobile device, or you will need to go to Google Earth on your laptop or desktop computer. There are many options here and you’ll want to select the one that allows you to enter the address. You can also zoom the map and click on the starting point of the roof you wish to select. After you’ve done this, you can click along the outer edge of the roof that you wish to calculate the area for.

See the source image

Roofing Measurements Using Google Earth

Each time you add points, the area will update and there is a box below that will convert this into acres, meters, kilometers, miles, and finally, square feet. It will also give you the perimeter of the shape of the roof.

Using this tool will be very helpful for you in finding out the acreage or the tract of land of your property. It will also give you the square footage of your roof and any other areas that you’re wanting to estimate. You can even embed this tool on a website that you own.

While these tools are very helpful, there are a few variables that you’ll want to know. If you’re in a rural area, you may have to go with the cross streets as the address may not bring up what you’re looking for. In such areas, you may wind up using the GPS coordinates or a landmark to get to where you’re going.

If you’re using the GPS, you’ll want to enter the latitude and then use a comma and enter the longitude. This will put you at a reference point that you can use to locate the facility or building that you wish to calculate the roofing on.

What do you need to know about aerial roof measurement?

Precise measurements must be taken to ensure the success of the project. SkyRoofMeasure™ aerial roof measurement reports are now available directly from blueprints, taking aerial roof measurement an extra step further to ensure that all of the angles are covered.

HOW TO ESTIMATE THE SIZE OF YOUR ROOF

Step One: Sketch Out Your Roof on Grid Paper

By doing this, you will have a much easier time figuring out the roof pitch and the roof surface areas. The best way to go about this by getting the longest dimension of the roof. A good thing to remember is that one roof square is equal to 100 square feet. Count how many squares there are and take that number and convert it into the measurement units you want to use for your drawing.

Step Two: Fill in the Details of Your Roof

Take note of things like valleys, diagonal distances, protrusions, overhangs, dormers, and hips as these will need their own measurements. Chimneys, vents, skylights, trim, and even pipes all affect the surface area of the roof. You may need to use binoculars to count out the squares of shingles in places that are unreachable. Sketch these areas out onto your roof diagram before moving onto the next step.

Step Three: Determine Roof Pitch

There are three ways by which you can measure your roof’s pitch.

  • Grab a ladder and place a level a foot or so up on the roof and hold. Measure the 12-inch mark from the bottom of the level down onto the roof. If this distance measures at four then you have a 4 in 12, or if it measures at 8, you have an 8 in 12 pitch.
  • Grab a ladder and jump up at the end of your house where the gable is. Place the level on the gable trim, flat against the house. Measure from the 12-inch mark on the level up to the bottom edge of the gable’s trim. The distance you get is the roof’s rise.
  • If you have an attic, you can place the level against one of the rafters and mark where the 12-inch mark is on the bottom of the rafter. Measure from the end of the level up to the bottom edge, and this will give you the roof’s rise.

The most common roof is a 6 in 12, which is a 27-degree angle with anything above this being anywhere between 30 and 45 degrees. Anything below a 6 in 12 is anywhere from a 5 to 23-degree angle.

Step Four: Calculate the Area of Your Roof

There are a few ways you can go about this, but typically the easiest way is to calculate the simple areas of the roof and then calculate the more complex areas. You can do this by finding out the estimated amount of how many shingles you will need. Measure out the length and width of each plane on your roof, including things like hips, dormers, and adjacent pitches. Multiply the length by the width to get the square footage of each plane.

Step Five: Input Results into a Roofing Calculator

Once you have the roof size in square feet (or in length times width as feet), the roof pitch, and the material you want your shingle to be, you can use a roofing calculator to get the total square feet of the roof area, the number of squares it has, and what the range of the installation cost will be. The average 1,700 square foot roof will have a roof area of around 1,901 square feet with twenty squares, and an installation cost of anywhere between $7,224 to $14,300.

When Ordering a Roofing Report Is More Effective: Even an experienced roofer/drone operator will need to study any photos or footage of a property carefully in order to make a detailed estimate or contract. Drones may be effective tools, but they are essentially just eyes in the sky – you might still run the risk of the operator miscalculating or misjudging critical data that can impact your orders, scheduling, and bottom line.

Know Your Teams’ Skillsets and Tools: Using drones for your roofing or contracting business can be a huge asset when it comes to documentation and archives. However, it’s important that you don’t come to rely on the skillset and license of one or two people.

Make sure your drone operators are professional – you are trusting them with an expensive piece of company property. While accidents can always happen, you should make sure that the person operating the drone always has their certified FAA license on hand, and can report back immediately if something does happen to the drone.

Know when a drone is an asset, and when it’s more cost and time effective to order a report. This may be up to your rep’s discretion, or you may have a protocol in place. Either way, it’s important to remember that while the drone is a fantastic piece of technology, that doesn’t always mean it’s the ONLY technology at their disposal.

Roofing Squares: A Way To Measure Your Roof

What Is A Roofing Square?

A roofing square is a measurement, but it has nothing to do with square feet, meters, yards, or miles. A roofing square is commonly used by roofing companies and is roughly equivalent to 100 square feet. This measurement does not change whether it is a square of shingles or a square of tarp. This is because roofing squares are used to make calculating the cost of materials and labor easier than if you had to use square feet or yards.

Who Uses Roofing Squares?

The roofing square size form of measurement is only used within the roofing and construction industries. Though you can use the measurement yourself to try to calculate the cost of re-shingling your homes, such tasks are usually best left to an experienced roofing contractor. Nonetheless, even if you have confidence in your ability to determine the correct amount of materials needed, there are still a few steps you should take before you try.
