Why Use Drones for Roof Measurements?

One of the main benefits of drones is their size and maneuverability.  This feature allows them to fly a few feet away from various building types and capture high-resolution imagery (sub-centimeter per pixel resolution) for residential, commercial, flat and metal roofs.

How Does it Work?
Once a drone inspection has been completed by a pilot in our on-demand network or by an in-house carrier pilot using our drone inspection software platform, all of the photos from the inspection are encrypted and uploaded into our cloud storage system.  Photogrammetry software, powered by a lot of computing power, processes this imagery into a 3D point cloud, 3D model, and 3D map (think Google Maps but much higher resolution).

Tips and Tricks

Don’t measure to the edge of the shingles or existing roofing. You will measure the roof deck dimensions. Measuring this way allows you to accurately consider overhang of the new panels.

Something else to think about: For areas such as the hip and valley panels, you may consider ordering a little bit longer than of a panel than you think you need them (6” to 12”). It’s always better to have too much material than not enough. You can always make cuts that allow the panels to fit. If panels are too short, you can add another panel, but you will have a lap, which is not terrible, but certainly not ideal.

Some Other Factors

As you can see, knowing how to measure your roof will give you a better understanding of your costs to  replace your roof. You can understand the importance of accurate measurements because it directly impacts the amount of material needed!

Your estimate from a roofing contractor should include this cost of roofing material needed for coverage (based on “squares”). That is just the start, however. Additional material is needed for any ridges, waterproofing the valleys, and so on. Depending on your roof type, different types of underlayment will need to be used. There’s a lot more that goes in to roofing costs than just what you can see.

Roofing issues can be stressful. Here at Sky Roof Measurement, we encourage our clients to be informed to reduce that stress.

Now that you understand the importance of accurate measurements, we’ll happily take care of that when you request an estimate within our service area. We have decades of experience and can do accurate estimates without risk or hurting yourself or damaging your roof!
