  1. Measure the width and length of each plane of the roof (including dormers), and then multiply those numbers to get the correct figure for the square footage of that area.
    Example: Plane 1 (A x B): 50’ x 20’ = 1000 sq ft
    Plane 2 (A x C): 50’ x 20’ = 1000 sq ft
  2. Note any skylights, chimneys or other parts of the roof that would not require materials. You can subtract those measurements from your total area.
  3. Add together the calculated square footage of each surface to get the figure for total square footage of the roof.
    Example: Plane 1 (1000 sq ft) + Plane 2 (1000 sq ft) = 2000 sq ft

  1. After determining the total square footage of the roof, you must calculate the pitch of the roof. Measure the vertical distance (rise) over a 12 inch horizontal segment (run).
    Example: The rise of this roof is 5”.
  2. Write down these numbers as the vertical measurement listed first and the horizontal measurement recorded second so you can find rise over run.
    Example: The rise over run of this roof is 5” over 12”.
  3. When you have the total square footage and rise over run of the roof, you can calculate the roof squares to determine how much materials are needed to cover the roof. To calculate the number of squares on a roof, you need to divide its total square feet by 100.
    Example: 1000 sq ft / 100 = 10 squares

How to calculate rafter length?

The formulas we use are the following:

  1. For calculations based on the roof rise:

meaning that:  rafter length = √(rise² + run²).

The length of the rafter is given from the long point of the ridge cut at the top down along the top edge the board to the same plumb cut on the rafter’s notch. The next result is the run. This is the horizontal measurement from the outside of the wall to the inside of the ridge.
Rafter span: this is the distance between the supporting wall and the centre of the roof measured horizontally. How To Calculate Roofing Square feet

A roofing square is a 10×10 area that’s equal to 100 square feet of roof surface.
A square simply refers to a 10′ x 10′ square of roofing. This is simply 100 square feet of roof. To find the squares, divide the overall roof area by 100 and then round up. For instance, if the roof is 1550 square feet, then it is 16 squares.
So a roof that has 1600 square feet of area has 16 squares. Remember that unless the roof is flat, the square footage of the building is different than the square footage of the roof.

How to measure your roof’s square footage 

The square footage of your roof has a huge impact on the cost of your replacement. It affects a number of cost factors, including the amount of materials used, labor, and time.

Area of a rectangle or square:
A = L x W
Area = Length x Width
Example: 20 feet x 10 feet = 200 square feet

Area of a trapezoid:
A = [(B1 + B2) x H] / 2
Area = [(Top + Bottom) x Height] / 2
Example: [(5 feet + 10 feet) x 6 feet] / 2 = 45 square feet

Area of a triangle:
A = (B x H) / 2
Area = (Base x Height) / 2
Example: (5 feet x 4 feet) / 2 = 10 square feet

When you have finished calculating the area of each plane, use this information to find your roof’s total square footage. Add the area of each plane together, and the sum will be the total square footage of the roof.

  • Before you do any roofing work, you must calculate the roof’s square footage to determine how much material you need.
  • Calculate each plane separately.
  • For example, if a triangle-shaped roof plane measures 60 feet along the base and is 30 feet high, we have 60 x 30 = 1,800 feet, divided by 2 = 900 square feet for the triangle-shaped plane.
  • The square footage would be 40 x 40 = 1,600 square feet (the square) plus 20 x 40 = 800 / 2 = 400 square feet (the triangle).

The more traditional way of scaling out blueprints (roof plans) is to do it by hand using various tools such as a tri-ruler and other utilitarian items. But, some roofing contractors are leveraging high-tech to their advantage by using aerial and satellite technology to measure, and roofing applications to save time and money.

The architects who create the blueprints don’t always anticipate the specific needs of the contractors who will perform certain jobs on the property, such as constructing the roof. The architects’ drawings are often too complex for roof bidding purposes.

Having only a blueprint for a new home doesn’t mean that a roofing contractor must put aside their high-tech roof measurement and estimating application and pull out the ol’ tri-ruler.

To find your roof’s total square footage:
  1. Measure the length and width of each plane on the roof (including dormers) then multiply length times width.
  2. Add the square footage of each of the planes together.
In addition to being a larger unit of measurement, a square is used so that there’s a standardized measurement no matter the layout or shape of the roof. For example, 10′ x 10′ is equal to 100 square feet, or one square. 4′ x 25 ‘ is also equal to one square. Both of these would require one square of material to cover.
