Footage is Not the Same as Home Square Footage

Depending on where the information is coming from is going to determine the basis on which the estimated roof footage is calculated. The roof square footage is what we (roofing contractor) need to calculate a budget quote to do the job.

### What is the standard size of a roof?

Most roofing is sold by the “square,” enough to cover 100 square feet of roof area. Our sample house — a typical two-story, 2,300-square-foot house with a medium-pitch roof — has a roof area of about 1,500 square feet.

Roof surfaces are measured in “squares”. A roofing square is equal to 100 square feet of the roof. To determine the number of squares on the gable roof example in this post, divide its total of 2400 square feet by 100 (2400 ÷ 100 = 24). This means you would need 24 squares of shingles to cover that roof.

#### What does a 7/12 pitch mean?

30.26 degrees

For example a 7:12 roof pitch means that for ever 12″ of horizontal distance the roof will increase in height by 7″. … The following diagram will let you easily convert roof pitch to degrees; a 7:12 pitch equals 30.26 degrees.

#### What does a 9/12 roof pitch mean?

Question: What is a 9/12 roof pitch? Answer: 9/12 roof pitch equivalents roof rises 9″ in a length of 12″. 9/12 roof pitch angle = 36.87 degrees.

## Save Time, Cover More Ground with Aerial Measurement Reports

Ordering an aerial measurement report is a much faster and convenient way to get the measurements of a roof. Instead of climbing on a ladder to measure a roof for shingles by hand and inputting measurements into an estimate for the homeowner, the entire process can be managed digitally, saving you time and eliminating measurement errors.
