Estimate Roof Size

Digital Roof Measurement ?

What Are Satellite Roof Measurements?

Definition of Digital Roof Measurement

Digital roof measurement is the process of calculating roof dimensions using satellite imagery, aerial views, and software tools. Instead of climbing onto the roof or using manual tools, homeowners and roofing professionals can now use digital roof measurement to accurately assess roof size, pitch, and materials needed.

Traditional vs. Digital Methods

Digital methods eliminate the risks and inaccuracies of manual measurement, streamlining the estimation process with reliable software.

How Does Digital Roof Measurement Work?

Using Google Earth or Maps

Digital roof measurements are taken using high-resolution aerial images of your home, which can be accessed through tools like Google Maps or Google Earth. With these platforms, you can:

  • Zoom in to get an aerial view of your roof

  • Use the measuring tool to draw around your roof perimeter

  • Instantly see the square footage of your roof

Key Data Points Measured

Once the measurements are gathered, the software calculates important metrics such as roof pitch, area, ridges, hips, valleys, and edges. This type of digital roof measurement is highly accurate and widely used in the roofing industry.

Why Use Digital Roof Measurement?

Safety and Convenience

  • No climbing required: You don’t have to risk injury by climbing onto your roof.

Accuracy and Time Efficiency

  • Fast and accurate: Measurements are calculated with precision and delivered quickly.

Material Planning and Cost Savings

  • Material estimation: Helps determine how many shingles, underlayment rolls, and other materials you’ll need.

  • Cost-saving: Prevents over-purchasing or underestimating material needs.

Contractors often add an extra 10% to the total measurement to account for waste or miscalculations, ensuring there’s enough material for the job.

How to Measure a Roof Using Google Earth

Step-by-Step Instructions

To use Google Earth for digital roof measurement:

  1. Open Google Earth on your desktop.
  2. Search for your address or zoom in to your location.
  3. Select the Measure tool from the left-hand panel.
  4. Click around the perimeter of the roof to mark edges.
  5. The tool will calculate the total area automatically.

Tips for Irregular Roof Shapes

If the roof has multiple sections or isn’t a perfect square, measure each section separately and add the numbers together for an accurate result.

Understanding Roofing Squares

What Is a Roofing Square?

Roofing materials are often sold based on roofing squares, not just square footage. One roofing square equals 100 square feet. For example:

  • A 2,000 sq. ft. roof = 20 roofing squares

Conversion Tips Using Calculators

If the roof has multiple angles or slopes, the actual material needed may be more. That’s why digital roof measurement tools often include a roof square calculator, converting the total area into easy-to-use roofing squares for quick planning.

Advanced 3D Aerial Roof Measurements

Features of 3D Measurement Services

Some services go beyond basic Google Maps tools and offer advanced features like:

  • 3D Aerial Roof Models

  • Accurate roof pitch measurements

  • Detailed calculations of rakes, ridges, hips, and valleys

  • Styled diagrams with color-coded roof edges

Coverage and Accuracy

These services typically use proprietary software and multiple satellite imagery sources to ensure precise coverage—reaching over 98% of U.S. properties.

What You Get with Professional Digital Roof Reports

  • Convenience: Measure your roof from your home computer.

  • Accuracy: Reduce the risk of buying too much or too little material.

  • Confidence: Know your roof’s dimensions before you visit the home improvement store.

Conclusion

Benefits of Satellite Roof Measurements

Using technology in Roof Measurements allows you to save valuable time in your business. Measuring by hand takes a long time because you need to measure the same more times to get precise results. So, this smart method helps you to do everything from measurement to sophisticated calculations without sacrificing accuracy. We deliver the reports at an affordable cost.

    • You’ll Save Hours: No baking in the hot sun all day as you fight your roof for positioning. A few clicks and you’re done. Use those hours to plan your DIY project instead.
    • You’re in Control. Not the Contractor: If you pay a contractor to take measurements, they’ve got all the leverage. They’ll choose labor and materials and make you pay for overhead expenses (plus a bit more to pad their pockets).
    • Get Accurate Measurements AND Estimates in Minutes: Satellites are more accurate than the most experienced contractor’s hands. You’ll get EXACT measurements of your roof with no human error. We’ll even provide an estimate for costs based on the average roofing materials.
  • It’s 100% Safe: Did we mention no ladders, measuring tapes, heights, or hot sun? Yeah, this is way safer!

How do you measure a roof for satellites?

In most cases, satellite and aerial roof measurement technology is 99% accurate, if you follow a few simple rules. Achieving accurate roof measurements manually isn’t any different. A manual roof takeoff by one roofer can easily vary from that of another.
Just measure the length and width of each plane on the roof, including dormers. Then, multiply length x width to get the square footage of each plane. Simply add the square footage of each of the planes together to derive the total square footage of your roof.
To find your roof’s total square footage: Measure the length and width of each plane on the roof (including dormers) then multiply length times width. Add the square footage of each of the planes together.
For a 1500 square foot house, you will need approximately 19 squares or 57 bundles or 1653 pieces of 3-tab standard-sized shingles (12 inch by 36 inch) when overhangs is 1 feet and roof slope is 4/12.
The average size of 12×12 shed roof is 3 squares, which typically requires 9 bundles of three-tab asphalt shingles or any other starter strips.
How many shingles do I need to protect my roof? The surface area of your roof will affect the number of bundles or squares you need. A 2,000 square foot roof requires 20 squares or 60 bundles.
Assuming your trailer’s outside walls are 10 feet high, you’ll have 140-square-foot trailer ends and 700-square-foot sides, for a total of 1,680 square feet. The cost to put in new vinyl siding on a 14 x 70 trailer cost ranges, at the time of publication, would start just above $3,000 and climb to $12,000 or more.

How many shingles do i need for a 12×12 shed:- for a 12×12 shed roof, you will need approximately 3 squares or 9 bundles or 261 pieces of three tab strip standard-sized shingles (12 inch by 36 inch) when overhangs is 1 feet and roof slope is 6/12.
How many bundles of shingles do i need for 1200 square feet:- for 1200 square feet or 12 squares roof, you will need approximately 36 bundles of standard size 3-tab shingles (12×3 = 36 bundles). Thus, for a 1200 square foot gable roof, you would need 36 bundles of shingles plus 10% of ridge, starter and wastages.

Cost of Shingles

Prices are based on a cost of around $30 to $35 per bundle of asphalt three-tab shingles or about $90 to $100 per square

By saying this, you might already realize that the difference between a 30-year shingle and a 50-year one is how long the product is guaranteed to last. In other words, 30-year architectural shingles are covered by the manufacturer from any unforeseen defects that could occur once the shingles are installed.

In most cases, satellite and aerial roof measurement technology is 99% accurate, if you follow a few simple rules. Achieving accurate roof measurements manually isn’t any different. A manual roof takeoff by one roofer can easily vary from that of another.
Multiply your house length by your house width to get the area. (For example, 40 feet x 30 feet = 1,200 square feet.) Next, multiply the area by your roof’s pitch. (1,200 x 1.05 = 1,260 square feet.)
  1. Unroll the blueprint onto a flat surface.
  2. Find the scale of the drawing.
  3. Choose a scaled ruler that accurately matches the scale of the drawing.
  4. Lay the proper scale next to the item on the drawing and take the measurement.
Method
  1. Find out what the scale on the drawing is.
  2. Measure the distance on the drawing using a ruler (or count the number of squares, if that’s an option).
  3. Multiply the distance you measure by the scale to give the distance in real life.
