How to calculate rafter length?

The formulas we use are the following:

  1. For calculations based on the roof rise:

rise² + run² = rafter length² ,

meaning that:  rafter length = √(rise² + run²).

Pitch – Is the incline of the roof represented as the ratio of rise to the span (twice the run). For example, if the roof rises 4 feet and the span is 16 feet (twice the run), then the pitch is 4/16, or 1/4.
But they do tend to space rafters in one of several industry-standard increments, typically either 12, 16 or 24 inches apart. These spacing intervals are measured “on center,” meaning that the measurement is taken from the center of one rafter’s horizontal surface to the center of the next rafter.

Ground measures only work well for a gabled roof, since there are usually just two main rectangular pitches to calculate area for. For more complex roof shapes, like hip roofs, you’ll need to work with a roofer or measure from on top of the roof itself to calculate its total area.

To estimate how many shingles you’ll need, first estimate the total square footage of your roof’s surface. To do this, measure the length and width of each plane on the roof, including dormers. Then, multiply length x width to get the square footage of each plane. Finally, calculate your roof’s total square footage by simply adding the square footage of each of the planes together.

For example, this shed roof has one roof plane. Simply measure length (A) x width (B): A x B = 120′ x 100′ = 12,000 sq. ft. for the total square footage of the roof.

This gable roof has two planes. So, multiply length (A) x width (B) to get the square footage for each plane. Then, add the two planes together to derive the total square footage of the roof:

  • Plane 1: 120′ x 100′ = 12,000 sq. ft.
  • Plane 2: 120′ x 100′ = 12,000 sq. ft.
  • Plane 1 + Plane 2 = 24,000 sq. ft. for the total square footage of the roof.

Roof surfaces are measured in “squares.” A square is an area of roof which measures 100 square feet. To determine the number of squares on the gable roof above, simply divide its total of 24,000 square feet by 100. The result is 240, and this means you would need 240 squares of shingles to cover that roof. The most common type of shingle, called a three-tab or strip shingle, is generally packaged three bundles per square.

For a new roof, you will also need the same amount of underlayment. So, in the gable roof example above, you would need 240 squares of underlayment. Underlayment usually comes in rolls of 4 squares each. So, covering 240 squares would require 60 rolls of underlayment. No underlayment is needed if you are applying shingles directly over an existing asphalt roof.

Be sure to add 10% to all of your material totals for trim allowance.

The Technique For Estimating Square Footage of Hip Roofs is Different

There is a different technique I use when measuring “hip” roofs, which have 4 sides and are shaped kind of like a pyramid. These roofs make it tough to count shingles so, through trial and error, I came up with a little calculation that has provided me with another simple but accurate estimation. When using this second calculation, the total square footage number you end up with may be a little higher than what is actually there. But I would rather slightly over-estimate the size of a roof job rather than under-estimate it, like I did a few times early on. This was before I started using these two calculations.

For Hip Roofs, I measure the length of the house and then I measure the width. I then multiply these 2 numbers together and I take that number and multiply it by 1.35.

I should mention that I use a Canon digital camera that has a 10x “optical” zoom along with a 40x “digital” zoom (not really sure what the hell that means exactly) but it allows me to zoom in really close to get great photos of the flashing as well as the condition of the current roofing materials. Regardless of which brand of camera you use, I have found that the most important feature is the “size of the zoom” because it allows you to take great photos of just about any roof while standing on the ground.

Speaking of cameras, the second most important feature to have in a digital camera that you plan to use for your Property Preservation Business, is that the camera’s flash provides enough light for you to take “above average” quality pics in complete darkness.

How to Measure Roof Pitch

Knowing the pitch of your roof is useful when designing an addition, installing skylights, or cutting new rake boards. Here’s an easy, safe way to determine the pitch from inside your attic.

  1. To measure the roof pitch, you’ll need an 18- or 24-inch level, a tape measure, and a pencil.
  2. First, measure 12 inches from one end of the level and make a mark.
  3. Then, in the attic, place the end of the level against the bottom of a roof rafter and hold it perfectly level.
  4. Now measure vertically from the 12-inch mark on the level straight up to the underside of the rafter, as illustrated. That measurement is the number of inches the roof rises in 12 inches.
