How to calculate rafter length?

The formulas we use are the following:

  1. For calculations based on the roof rise:

meaning that:  rafter length = √(rise² + run²).

Pitch – Is the incline of the roof represented as the ratio of rise to the span (twice the run). For example, if the roof rises 4 feet and the span is 16 feet (twice the run), then the pitch is 4/16, or 1/4.
But they do tend to space rafters in one of several industry-standard increments, typically either 12, 16 or 24 inches apart. These spacing intervals are measured “on center,” meaning that the measurement is taken from the center of one rafter’s horizontal surface to the center of the next rafter.

The length of the rafter is given from the long point of the ridge cut at the top down along the top edge the board to the same plumb cut on the rafter’s notch. The next result is the run. This is the horizontal measurement from the outside of the wall to the inside of the ridge.
Rafter span: this is the distance between the supporting wall and the centre of the roof measured horizontally. The span is NOT the distance between the supporting wall and the peak of the roof measured along the diagonal. Rafter: This is the lumber that runs from the centre (peak) to the supporting wall.
2-grade 2×6 joists can span up to 10 feet 9 inches from beam to beam when spaced the standard 16 inches apart with a maximum live load of 30 inches per square foot. In comparison, No. -1 grade lumber can span slightly further to 10 feet 11 inches under the same parameters.

A = L x W
Area = Length x Width
Example: 20 feet x 10 feet = 200 square feet

Area of a trapezoid:
A = [(B1 + B2) x H] / 2

There are two main categories of roofing: sloped and flat. A flat roof has a slope of 2 in 12 or less. The run always remains constant at 12 inches. A low slope roof is anywhere from 2 in 12 to 4 in 12. Conventional slope roof range between 4 in 12 and 8 in 12. Anything more than 9 in 12 is considered steep. Steeper-sloped roofs are considered more aesthetically pleasing and last longer. These benefits do not come cheaply though. A 12 in 12 roof can cost up to 50% more than a 4 in 12 roof. This is because a steep-sloped roof requires a taller chimney and more lumber for framing. However, the end result may be well worth it as your roofing material is estimated to last up to 50% longer and will require less maintenance.

Roof styles or types are usually predesigned by the builder of your home. They determine what kind of materials you can have on the roof, due to the slope. The first option is a flat roof. This style is just like a long board across the top of your home. A gabled roof looks like two sides of a triangle. A shed roof is slanted down one way, either towards the left or right. How to Measure a Roof From the Ground

If you’re planning work on a roof and don’t have the building plans, taking preliminary measurements from the ground allows you to approximate the roof area and estimate some costs. Measuring hip roofs, dormer roofs or roofs on hillside homes from the ground requires experience and special equipment. But, you can measure a gable or flat roof from the ground with the help of an assistant.

Method 1: Counting asphalt shingles to measure your roof area from the ground.

Most asphalt shingles are three feet wide with three tabs. Each tab is got 5 inches of reveal. So by counting these in digital photos you can come up with pretty reliable dimensions. If there is any doubt on the shingle dimensions, you can calibrate the method by measuring a typical shingle in a lower, accessible location.

Method 2. Pythagorean Theorem.

Measure the horizontal run of the roof surface from the ground (‘a’ in the third figure below). Then count the number of shingles to the peak of the roof. Multiple the number of shingles times the width of each shingle (which you can measure at ground level) to get ‘b’ in the figure below. Then calculate the line length of the roof (‘c’ in the figure) using the Pythagorean Theorem; c = square root (a squared + b squared). It is also easy to calculate the roof angle by taking the inverse tangent of b divided by a.

How Roof Pitch is Calculated

To accurately calculate the area of your roof, you must first determine its slope, or pitch. A roof’s pitch is determined by how much it rises vertically for every foot it runs horizontally. Thus, a moderate “6 in 12” roof pitch means that the roof rises 6 inches vertically for every 12 horizontal inches it runs. A “12 in 12” pitch is a steep, 45-degree angle roof. While these tools are very helpful, there are a few variables that you’ll want to know. If you’re in a rural area, you may have to go with the cross streets as the address may not bring up what you’re looking for. In such areas, you may wind up using the GPS coordinates or a landmark to get to where you’re going.

Special precautions must be taken when measuring the area of a roof. The images that appear on google maps are often at a slight angle, which combined with the angle of a roof can cause errors. For this reason it is best to outline the roof at points which are all at the same elevation. On a simple house for instance you would only click on the corners of the roof and not on any points along the peak as that would cause an error. After measuring the area of the footprint you can estimate the actual roof area based on the angle of the roof. Similarly if you using the area calculator tool to measure a roof with multiple levels, you should do the individual section separately. The google maps area calculator is not 100% accurate. Do not rely on this tool as your only resource in making important decisions.

How to Measure Roof Slope from On the Roof

To use the direct roof slope measurement procedure, in addition to safe access to a roof that won’t be damaged by touching or walking on it, you need: a tape measure and a carpenter’s level. This procedure to measure roof slope can be performed on the roof or from a ladder at roof edge. 

  • Hold the carpenter’s level in a horizontal position with one end touching the roof surface.
  • Measure out 12″ along the level bottom edge – the green line in our sketch. Mark this point on the leve.

  • Read that distance in inches. The result is inches of rise per foot of run.

Step One: 

You should start measuring by printing out a top view of your home. To do this, simply line up your house and click on the top corner to print.

Step Two:

  1. Frame your home back to the top shot. NOTE: You’ll want to be directly above and zoomed in as much as possible.
  2. Click the ruler icon on the left side of your screen.
  3. Switch the unit of measurement to feet.
  4. Click on a starting and stopping point, and you’ll get an estimated measure of distance.
  5. Start logging in your measurements.

Step Three: 

When complete, you’ll have a general idea of the size of your roof to send to a metal roofing supplier for an estimate.

Google Earth also offers a perimeter for the shape of the area that you can use to measure out the edges or area of a lawn, fencing, yard, the roof and more. As long as you keep in mind that these are only the most basic of guidelines, you’re going to be okay in your calculations. Since you’re using Google you’ll have to factor in any changes that may have been made since the satellite pictures have been taken and remember that the slightest changes may not be yet showing on your pictures.

Once you have a basic starting point you can go from there and make the necessary adjustments to have an accurate reading of the roof shape and size and factor in any other necessary adjustments that need to be made on your calculation.

If you’re intending on doing a shingle roof, you’re going to need to consider exactly how many shingles you will need to procure. To do this, you’ll need to assess the total square footage of your roof’s total surface. Doing so is straightforward. You or your hired roofing team will initiate by evaluating the span and width of each plane of the roof, adding to any dormers. Multiply the entire length by the width to receive the exact square footage of each plane. In the end, tally the roof’s full square footage by summing the square footage of each plane together.

Every roof surface is surveyed in “squares.” A square is purely any area of roof which computes at an exact 100 square feet. You’ll need to find out the number of squares on a roof in order to learn the number of shingles you’ll need to cover the roof. Let’s say you have a gable roof that is a sum of 24,000 square feet.
